This site provides information on the health risks for travel in South Africa.  Additionally it provides appropriate advice, information on mass gatherings, travel advisories and disease outbreaks. The information is updated on a regular basis.

SaNTHNet is not intended to provide a personal risk assessment for the individual traveller, for such advice, travellers are encouraged to seek professional advice from a travel medicine provider.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases

The NICD is a major global player in infectious disease intelligence. The NICD is a resource of knowledge and expertise in regionally relevant communicable diseases to the South African Government, to SADC countries and the African continent. The NICD assists in the planning of policies and programmes and supports appropriate responses to communicable disease problems and issues.

South African Society of Travel Medicine

The South African Society of Travel Medicine

SASTM’s Mission is to guide the profession in all aspects relating to the practice of travel medicine, liaise with the travel industry, consult with relevant authorities, advise the public and collaborate nationally and internationally on all aspects relating to Travel Medicine.

National Institute for Communicable Disease

The NICD is a valuable resource available to all universities and technikons, and provides training for medical registrars, intern medical scientists and intern medical technologists in public health-oriented communicable diseases. The training function is both in laboratory science as well as in field epidemiology for which the Field Epidemiology Laboratory Training programme (FELTP) has been developed. The NICD is also home to the Africa Centre for Integrated Laboratory Training (ACILT), offering training courses for HIV and TB testing, among others, to Southern African countries. Opportunities to train in unique settings such as the BSL-4 laboratory can also only be offered by the NICD.

The mission of the DOH is to improve health status through the prevention of illnesses and the promotion of healthy lifestyles and to consistently improve the healthcare delivery system by focusing on access, equity, efficiency, quality and sustainability.

The National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) provides health information for both health professionals and travellers. The information has been compiled by the NaTHNaC clinical and scientific team, and is updated regularly.
